In today’s rapidly evolving global landscape, the relevance of academic research is increasingly being measured by its societal contributions. As a result, aligning scholarly work with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has never been more vital. To highlight the ways in which Cabells (in partnership with Saint Joseph’s University, and in the spirit of SDG 17) is championing this alignment, Cabells and AACSB are hosting the upcoming webinar Assessing SDG Impact: Elevating and Measuring the Societal Impact of Research.” The session will take place on Wednesday, September 18 at 11:00 a.m. EST and is free for all AACSB members. The goal of the webinar is to provide actionable insights into how academic stakeholders can be strategically positioned to achieve meaningful societal impact.

The webinar is designed for educators, researchers, and academic leaders who are seeking to make a difference through their scholarly activities. Participants will learn how to align their research efforts with the SDGs — a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all — and discover innovative ways to measure and elevate the impact of research, ensuring that it contributes to societal well-being in tangible, measurable ways.

Key topics to be covered include methodologies for assessing research impact such as ChatSDG and the SDGII journal rating system. ChatSDG is an AI tool, developed by SJU and Cabells, that provides a framework for measuring the societal impact of research and offers suggestions for how a school can increase the impact of its journal articles and how practitioners can use the research to advance the SDGs. The SDGII journal rating systems rates journals from 1 to 5 based on the amount of research it publishes that aligns with the SDGs. The goal of the SDGII is to highlight and encourage journals and authors to promote sustainability-conscious research, and enable administrators and department heads to assess the sustainability impact of their institution’s published work.

The session will also offer practical guidance and actionable strategies for aligning research with SDGs, tools for effectively communicating the societal relevance of scholarly work, and resources and initiatives for those looking to get involved and work toward achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
