It has been a busy and invigorating spring for the Cabells team so far, and we’ve only just begun. We have had stops in Atlanta and San Diego to champion tools and ideas in two crucial and urgent areas (achieving the UN’s SDGs and protecting medical publishing), recorded a podcast series and webinar discussing how to recognize and avoid predatory journals, and we’re looking forward to upcoming meetings in Portland, OR and British Columbia for more of the same. We are fortunate to have met so many inquisitive and hopeful people along the way, and it heartens us to know there are so many driven by the same causes and working toward common goals.
The excitement was palpable in Atlanta at the AACSB’s 2024 ICAM, where as Bloomberg noted, attendees were “flocking to a booth to test-drive a chatbot developed to tackle some of the toughest issues in business education.” That booth was ours and the chatbot is ChatSDG, an AI tool that rates how well scholarly journals and individual articles align with the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The result of Cabells’ collaboration with David Steingard and his team from Saint Joseph’s University’s Haub School of Business (SJU), ChatSDG “not only is built upon the ethical standards embedded in the SDGs, but also satisfies AACSB’s accreditation requirement to show evidence of societal impact.” We’re excited at what the future holds for our partnership with SJU and we will be sure to keep you updated.

The Society of Hospital Medicine’s (SHM) annual conference, Converge 2024, was equally as fruitful in another area that is so important to us – protecting medical researchers and their work and fostering research integrity. We could not have hoped for more from our first visit to SHM’s Converge, and we’re already looking forward to next year’s meeting.
In April, we gathered some of our publication experts to examine ways to identify and avoid the various types of predatory publishing operations we encounter in our work. A group of us including members of our journals team, Yasmeen and Ruth, along with myself and our project manager, Ashley (all strengthened by the support of our colleague Alexandra), had the pleasure of sitting down with Bill Mickey, editorial director at CHOICE to record a series of episodes for their podcast, The Authority File. Keep an ear out over the next few weeks when our episodes will be released.
We followed that up by again convening with the wonderful folks from ACRL/Choice to discuss the perils of deceptive journal operations in our webinar “Cover to Cover: Profiling Predatory Publishing.” We did not need confirmation that this topic is still at the forefront of academic and medical publishing, but if we did, it would have been provided by the nearly 2,000 registrants and the steady stream of their insightful questions and comments.

But the fun doesn’t stop there. We will next be heading to Portland, Oregon to attend MLA ’24, the annual conference of the Medical Library Association. If Portland is anything like the past two annual MLA conferences in New Orleans and Detroit, we know we are in for a bustling event with many great conversations. If you will be in Portland, be sure to stop by booth 721 to say hello.

Last but definitely not least, we are proud to once again sponsor the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) North America Biennial Meeting at the University of Victoria in British Columbia, as well as the PRME Global Forum taking place virtually on the 18th of June.
If you can register to attend the Global Forum you will not be disappointed, as students, faculty, deans, board members, and other committed stakeholders gather to discuss the latest innovations and challenges in responsible management education. We hope you will join us at this vitally important and eye-opening event.
We’re excited for what’s to come in May and June as we continue to advocate for resources and causes we are committed to supporting and that we know will lead to positive changes in the world. We look forward to seeing you either in person or virtually along the way!
