June 2026 marks the 10th anniversary in the UK of its tectonic vote to leave the European Union. The so-called Brexit debate consumed the country at the time, and has continued to factor in almost every major political change the UK has had in the last decade – right up to and including the resignation of Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, heralding the arrival of no less than the seventh inhabitant of 10 Downing Street in that time.

Brexit has introduced many changes to the UK political landscape, not least a whole new lexicon of terms to describe the unique set of challenges that have befallen the country as a result. One of the more memorable was ‘cakeism’, a peculiar form of political rhetoric that promised citizens that Brexit would allow them to ‘have their cake and eat it’. While the idea of unlimited cake is an attractive one, it is fair to say that this bounteous vision has yet to be realized.

Recipe for success

Despite the evident limits of a cakeist doctrine for a post-EU world for the UK, the idea of obtaining all the benefits with no downsides is not an impossible one. For researchers, proving a hypothesis to be correct or hitting a rich seam of data can often be a win-win situation. Similarly, having a research article accepted in a top journal is unlikely to provide too many problems. But what happens in that uncertain, in-between phase, where the research is being written up but the identity of the journal to publish it remains elusive?

Well, worry not, for help is at hand with our handy guide to getting the most out of Cabells two databases, Journalytics and Predatory Reports. These huge resources are now available for all subscribers on a single platform, making it even easier to earmark high-reputation journals while steering clear of predatory titles. This has five key benefits for all users, which we have listed below for all users to take advantage of in the future (and eat cake as well, if you like).

Top Five Benefits (in cake form):

  1. ‘Chocolate’ – Using one of the three Journalytics databases – Academic, Medicine, or the new STEM product – in conjunction with Predatory Reports is a failsafe option which will provide successful results every time.
  1. ‘Fruit’ – The new CompassAI feature in Journalytics products means you can be very targeted in your approach, inputting your abstract to obtain the right mix of journal possibilities while avoiding missteps.
  1. ‘Wedding’ – Using all of the data available from Journalytics means you can adopt a layered approach to identify top targets, while having a strong foundation without any nefarious predatory journals.
  1. ‘Lemon Drizzle’ – Reporting to senior colleagues that you have used both Cabells data resources in researching your publishing outlets shows a robust approach and high level of discernment.
  1. ‘Buffet’ – Only the very lucky ones pick one journal and publish there, so having a smorgasbord of verified journal choices is the optimum strategy for most authors.
